Our Email To The BBC Trust – Save 6 Music

Hello,

As someone who works for a small independent label, the thought that 6 Music could close fills me with sadness and worry. 6 Music really is a music station for music fans and the fact that there is such an outpouring of anger at the decision to shut the station proves how much it means to so many people. On a professional level it gave the label great hope that we could communicate and have our releases heard by real music fans. It also filled us with pride that such musical luminaries such as Steve Lamacq, Marc Riley and Tom Robinson took the time to listen and enjoy what we put out. It has also been with great pleasure that our bands have gone in for sessions with 6 Music where we have had the chance to see the passion and enthusiasm that goes into every show.

I appreciate there has been a call for cuts to how the BBC spends it’s money and I appreciate that as a public broadcaster you need to provide the best quality for everyone. However, the decision to take away two key radio stations (I have read much in support of the Asian Network too) seems like you are stripping the BBC of some real quality. The closest thing we have in this country to 6 Music is XFM – it’s a station mainly heard in London and Manchester and has to target it’s output to attract advertisers. The beauty of the license fee is the unique high quality output the BBC could afford to produce.

Exceptional broadcasters taking risks on brand new music should be something the BBC is proud of and not something to cut back on.

Another day, another copyright infringment

There are few things we at Heist Or Hit dislike more than sending out email’s asking blogs/torrents/dodgy Russian sites to stop leaking our music. I have spent a good amount of time today doing a sweep to see what I could find and basically it’s people who don’t understand how releasing music works. Or more so think they have a right to take something for nothing.

Let’s be totally honest with you, from time to time we download albums for free but our moral compass means we will go out and buy the album afterwards. Here’s a good example, I gave the new Horrors album a listen after all the praise it has been receiving. Fair enough, it’s great so I’m going to buy it soon, plus my brother will be getting it as a birthday present. Just because we can take something for nothing, does not mean we should.

You can give it all the ‘major labels are scum of the earth’ spin as you like. Ultimately taking someones hard work for nothing is illegal and wrong. More so, what does it say of your appreciation of this art form. I know that LoveLikeFire and The Answering Machine have spent years learning their instruments, practicing, writing songs, channeling all their efforts into their music. Not only has money gone into recording these albums but hours of hard work. But hey, if you can download the results in 10 minutes for free why shouldn’t you?!

If anything we are getting less out of the music by having too much of a good thing. Remember when you had to save up for an album and it meant so much more to you? When you didn’t have a computer with a hundred new releases you can maybe give half a listen to as you are too busy? When you persisted with something and realised how great it was because you had spent time and energy and money buying it? Would I enjoy Neutral Milk Hotel as much as I do now had I just given it a casual download listen? No fucking way. Are they one of my favourite bands in the world as a result of the work I put into their music? 100% yes.

Falco from Future Of The Left is a great man and put his point across well in this blog which is well worth reading.

Hey Bought Our Vinyl?!

If we have learnt anything from today, it’s that illegal downloading is terrible! If you have been so kind as to have bought one of our vinyls but also want the MP3s then all we ask is that you take a photo of yourself with your record and email it to us at: vinyldownload at heist or hit records dot com

Once we have received your photo we will email you the music straight away. We will also hopefully put the photos up at some stage so let me know in your email if you don’t want your face on the internet.
